has been at the helm of the Center for Latino Progress – CPRF as its Executive Director since 2007, and has served in various capacities with The Center since 2000. Under her leadership, The Center has expanded its workforce contextualized programming and presented its models at national conferences. The Center has also increased its comprehensive support services (youth, college, career and civics programs) and its adult civic and educational activities while maintaining the organization’s competent services and cultural enrichment programs that foster individual and community growth. Ms. Terón has been integral in building the agency’s capacity, making it the first Latino agency in the State of Connecticut to provide legal immigration services with the recognition of the Board of Immigration Appeals. She increased the agency’s capacity to offer HUD approved homeownership and financial counseling services. Ms. Terón spearheads The Center’s social enterprise program, BiCi Co. (Bicicleta y Comunidad), the first bike community space, bike shop, and training center in the City of Hartford. More..


Jimmy Torres Velez Hijo de Juan Torres y Mercedes Vélez, nació el 11 de agosto de 1962 en el Bronx Hospital en New York.  Sus padres fueron trabajadores de la manufactura en varios lugares de la ciudad, una muerte en la familia los trajo de regreso a la Isla. La familia se mudó en varias ocasiones y aunque vivió algunos años de su vida en Arecibo, llegó a edad escolar a Bayamón dónde ha vivido el resto de su vida. Desde joven ha militado en movimientos políticos, luchas laborales y estudiantiles participando en la huelga de la Universidad de Puerto Rico de 1981, donde fue suspendido por su participación en el boicot al pago de matrícula. Obtuvo un Bachillerato en Artes con concentración en Relaciones Laborales de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en el 1985.

Como parte de su bachillerato, hizo su práctica con el Comité de Trabajadores Agrícola (CATA) en Glassboro, New Jersey y conoció los trabajos comunitarios y deseos de unidad que para entonces realizaba el Congreso Nacional por los Derechos de los Puertorriqueños (National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights) en la diáspora. Nilda Iris Ruiz is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Asociación Puertorriqueños en Marcha, Inc. (APM). Since Ms. Ruiz’s arrival in March 2005, APM has embarked on a dynamic, new course which includes a full agency restructuring that maximizes the full potential of the agency’s human and capital resources while building on its nearly 40 years of service to the City’s Eastern North Philadelphia community.

Ms. Ruiz is a Mayoral Appointee to the Philadelphia City Planning Commission, and in 2008 served as Co-Chair of Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter’s Transition Team. From October 1999 to March 2005, Ms. Ruiz was the Senior Community Development Director for the East Coast at National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national constituency-based Hispanic organization. She managed NCLR’s community development activities from Maine to Puerto Rico; provided training and technical assistance in real estate development finance and organizational management; and originated and underwrote revolving loans for the Raza Development Fund (NCLR’s subsidiary CDFI).
