SUMMARY:The Puerto Rican Radical Tradition - Exploring the CENTRO Spring and Summer 2026 Journals
DESCRIPTION:Nearly fifteen years in the making\, this project began with the goal to give students and young activists a clear entry point into critical\, often untranslated works on Puerto Rican history. Due to an unprecedented volume of submissions\, the highest for any special issue in the journal’s recent history\, this project has been expanded into two comprehensive volumes. \n\n\n\nGuest-edited by José Laguarta Ramírez\, Sandy Plácido\, Iris Morales and Saulo Colón Zavala\, these volumes offer a look at the victories\, defeats and transgenerational power of Puerto Rican radicalism. DESCRIPTION:Mil gracias por su disposición a colaborar con mi exhibición “VISIONES” y por todo el trabajo que CENTRO lleva a cabo para la educación y mejora de nuestra hermosa comunidad.  \nLa intención de crear este panel es poder tener conversaciones que nos unan en reconocer nuestro poder. \nTítulo del panel: \n“Visiones pa’ nuestro futuro\, \nacciones pa’ hoy” \nEste panel es un llamado a la comunidad diaspórica puertorriqueña\, para unirse en el compartir de conocimientos en el camino a nuestra liberación.  \nMe encantaría poder recibir como parte de este panel a alguien que tenga conocimiento sobre la historia de Puerto Rico y sus revoluciones. Sería de muchísimo valor tener a un historiador que pueda contribuir a la conversación un análisis histórico y geopolítico. La conversación será guiada desde como el pasado ha construido nuestro presente y cuales acciones son las más importantes en crear nuestro futuro colectivo que deseamos. \nSi hay alguien dentro de CENTRO que se alinee con lo histórico político y del arte boricua sería un honor poder tener su presencia en este panel.  \nEstoy hablando con otres compas para reclutar a estas otras sillas para el panel. SUMMARY:Archiving Home: A Community of Practice
DESCRIPTION:Part showcase. Part workshop\, Part happening. Come join us for Archiving Home: A Community of Practice. This culminating event will highlight the work of Archiving Home participants while inviting broader dialogue and engagement with the community and other practitioners. Join us to learn about non-traditional diasporic archival practices\, connect with others interested in diasporic memory work\, and engage with the emotional\, spiritual\, and personal side of archiving.Archiving Home: A Community of Practice is a collaborative initiative between CENTRO\, the Dominican Studies Institute\, and the Haitian Studies Institute that brought together archivists\, cultural workers\, and community memory practitioners engaging with diaspora- and ethnic studies-focused archives. Through shared-meals\, public workshops\, and collective zine-making\, Archiving Home participants explored the technical and ethical challenges of working with bilingual materials\, sustaining community-centered approaches\, and bridging institutional practice with the lived experiences and cultural production of diasporic communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArchiving Home: Diasporic Archivists and the Labor of Belonging\n\n\n\n10:30 AM – 12:00 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring this roundtable discussion\, archivists from Centro\, the Dominican Studies Institute\, the Haitian Studies Institute\, Hostos College\, and the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute will discuss the impetus behind Archiving Home: A Community of Practice as well as their experiences as members of the diasporas they help document and how their personal relationships to community\, memory\, and belonging shape archival labor. This roundtable will explore how these relationships shape what is collected\, preserved\, described\, and made accessible\, as well as the responsibilities and possibilities that emerge when documenting the histories of diasporic communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCasa de Memorias: Photo Printing and Collaging with Archives\n\n\n\n1:30 PM – 2:45 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Stephanie Alvarado of Fotos y Recuerdos Archives for photo printing and collaging with archives. Each participant will print family photos to make a memory collage that will be preserved in archival materials. We will discuss strategies for family photo preservation and collective memory making as a form of resistance\, processing grief\, and a spiritual form of archiving home. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop has limited spots! \n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\nRSVP Here!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReimagining Diasporic Archives: A Conversation with Independent and Community Memory Workers\n\n\n\n3:00 PM – 4:15 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConceptualized as a project that sought to bring together ethnic studies archivists and librarians from the City University of New York (CUNY) system to discuss the technical and ethical challenges of working with bilingual collections from within the institution\, the Archiving Home initiative took on a different shape after hosting community-centered workshops and opening the discussion to other diasporic archivists’/memory workers from within and beyond traditional institutions. The common thread of “affect” that is present throughout the work of diasporic archivists and the objects they steward\, especially in regard to preserving different ideas of “home”\, soon became the focus of workshops and group reflections. SUMMARY:A Decade of PROMESA: Accountability\, Good Governance\, and Puerto Rico’s Future
DESCRIPTION:Ten years ago\, PROMESA was signed into law to allow Puerto Rico to restructure its debt and achieve fiscal responsibility. While the accrual of that debt has been widely contested\, what ensued was austerity measures to the detriment of the health care system\, public education system\, public infrastructure\, and residents in Puerto Rico. As Puerto Ricans have navigated a decade without consistent access to basic needs\, the streets of Viejo San Juan have erupted in protest as Puerto Ricans demand accountability and a government that adequately serves its people.
