Shellyne Rodriguez' practice is a historical materialist engagement with colonial and imperial subjugation past and present. Her texts, drawings, collage, and sculpture work depicts and archives how the many interconnected diasporas located on the peripheries within empire, specifically in New York City make life. Shellyne addresses these inquiries through an art historical relationship with the baroque, from below – which she calls quebrao. An anagram of the word baroque which means "broken." An anticolonial insurgent intervention. Shellyne stewards the history of people and places on the margins, engaged in strategies of survival against erasure and subjugation.
