Media Producer

Karem Orrego (she/her) is a filmmaker from Lima, Perú, an editor and producer at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies, and a co-producer at Rada Studio, where she has contributed to GOING TO MARS: THE NIKKI GIOVANNI PROJECT, winner of the 2024 Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking, and BLACK GIRLS PLAY: THE STORY OF HAND GAMES, both shortlisted for the Academy Awards. Exploring immersive storytelling and new cinematic languages to center voices and fragmented histories often erased from dominant narratives, she co-directed SHATTERING THE PICTRES IN OUR HEADS, a experiential, multi-screen film installation challenging stereotypical portrayals of Indigenous peoples of the Mountain West, which won an Anthem Award for Best Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, part of the Webby Awards initiative. A 2024 Baldwin for the Arts Fellow, she is currently producer and cinematographer on a Season 6 episode of the Emmy-winning PUERTO RICAN VOICES and is developing an intimate hybrid short documentary with filmmaker Carlos Rivera Fernández, weaving the oral history of a 100-year-old grandmother’s journey from Puerto Rico to 1950s New York.
