Translator

The Center for Puerto Rican Studies (CENTRO) at Hunter College, is a university-based research institute whose mission is to produce, facilitate, and disseminate interdisciplinary research about the experiences of Puerto Ricans in the U.S. and to collect, preserve, and provide access to archival and library resources documenting the history and culture of Puerto Ricans. To complement these core activities, Centro sponsors a year-round program of educational and cultural activities.

About the Position: 

Centro is currently seeking a skilled and motivated individual for the position of Translator (English to Spanish). As a Translator, you will be responsible for translating content across various mediums, including social media, Centro’s website, educational materials, and media projects. The Translator will play a crucial role in ensuring effective communication and cultural relevance in our outreach efforts in both English and Spanish. This is a part-time position effective through June 30, 2024. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Translate written content from English to Spanish with accuracy and cultural sensitivity.
  • Collaborate with the Communications, Media and Education teams to ensure consistency in messaging across platforms.
  • Translate and adapt content for social media posts, website updates, educational materials and media projects.
  • Translate exhibition and educational materials.
  • Meet competing deadlines and manage multiple translation projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications: Finalists should meet a majority of the following qualifications

  • Proficiency in both English and Spanish (written and verbal).
  • Previous experience in translation, particularly in the context of social media, websites, and educational materials.
  • Familiarity with Puerto Rican culture and current social issues is a plus but not a requirement. 
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality translations.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.

Job Type:
Part time – Maximum 20 hours per week

Compensation:
$20-$25 hourly
