Internship position – Library

The Centro Library and Archives is a treasured place where researchers, academics, teachers, students, genealogists, filmmakers, and the community at large find primary (historical documents) and secondary sources about the history and culture of the Puerto Rican diaspora. The Digital Collections provide access to photographs, documents, artifacts, art, maps, oral histories, moving image and audio clips, and other digitized or born digital material pertaining to stateside Puerto Ricans.

Responsibilities

  • Shelve and arrange books, DVDs, Microfilms and other library materials in order, alphabetically and numerically in the Reference Stacks
  • Locate and pull books, DVDs, Microfilms and other library materials and help prepare them for researcher visits
  • Assist with shelf maintenance, such as shelf reading, shifting, or flagging damaged books
  • Assist with compiling and maintaining reader metrics
  • Assists patrons with basic computer, internet and audio/visual equipment usage, including microfilm machines and scanners
  • Assist with researcher needs such as photocopying document requests, etc.
  • Answer simple in-person inquiries and refer patrons to the appropriate person(s) or place(s) for further assistance
  • Help set up the Reading Room for events and programs
  • Project a positive and courteous attitude to the public by providing exceptional customer service
  • Perform other related tasks as needed and work on special projects as assigned

Preferred Skills

  • Interest in Puerto Rican and Latinx/Latin American History.
  • Minimum: Current or recent undergraduate status, especially good for students hoping to learn library science
  • Knowledge of computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe, etc.).
  • Willingness to learn Library Classification Systems and generally the operations of a Library & Archives.
  • Strong organization and time-management skills; attention to accuracy and detail is essential.
  • Working knowledge of Spanish is desirable.
  • Willing and eager to learn new skills and work with a diverse group of people.
  • Physical requirements include lifting, bending, and pushing carts up to 40lbs.
