Graphic Design Assistant

The Center for Puerto Rican Studies (CENTRO) at Hunter College, is a university-based research institute whose mission is to produce, facilitate, and disseminate interdisciplinary research about the experiences of Puerto Ricans in the U.S. and to collect, preserve, and provide access to archival and library resources documenting the history and culture of Puerto Ricans. To complement these core activities, Centro sponsors a year-round program of educational and cultural activities

About the Position:

CENTRO is seeking a part-time Graphic Design Assistant to CENTRO’s Graphic Design Coordinator and Lead Graphic Designer. This position will report to the Communications Director. Centro is a dynamic organization dedicated to advancing Puerto Rican studies and culture; interested candidates must show a demonstrated interest in CENTRO’s mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Lead Graphic Designer and Graphic Design Coordinator in design tasks and maintaining design consistency across all materials.
  • Assist with the design process and implementation of edits for the CENTRO Journal, CENTRO Data Hub Reports, and other publications including books.
  • Complete design requests from CENTRO units for items with templates: business cards, rack cards, Post cards, presentations, event signage, flyers, social media graphics, banners, and more as assigned.
  • Assist in project managing design tasks using Asana, tracking review times and implementation of edits while ensuring timely completion of projects.
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date design files and assets on Drive and Canva for easy access and proper record keeping.
  • Collaborate with team members to gather project requirements, provide design recommendations, and iterate on designs based on feedback received.

Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: Minimum of a high school diploma is required
    Preferred Qualifications: Finalists should meet a majority of the following qualifications
  • Must be a recent graduate or currently pursuing a degree in Graphic Design.
  • Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and Canva.
  • Understanding of design principles, typography, color theory, and layout techniques and a willingness to learn new skills.
  • Strong project management skills
  • Attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to take direction, receive feedback, and incorporate changes into design work.

Job Type:
Part time – Maximum 20 hours per week

Compensation:
$23 hourly

Midtown and East Harlem locations, New York, NY: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)
