The Art History Program at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus, has been selected to collaborate with the Center for Puerto Rican Studies in New York City on a database and research tool focused on Puerto Rican diaspora artists. Twenty collaborators, mostly students, will produce critical essays or professional interviews on diaspora artists to expand the research resources available on the platform.
Diasporican Art in Motion is an initiative of the Center that has been in development for just over two years and has been partially funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. The platform, aimed at art researchers, curators, educators, and students, features over 140 active profiles on its website and approximately 300 profiles in development. The tool seeks to bring visibility to the cultural fabric of the Puerto Rican diaspora, first through the creation of a directory and now, in its second phase, through the production of knowledge about these artists via a documentary series and academic essays that will be published online in the Center’s virtual journal, RicanWritings.
“When we identified the need to produce academic knowledge that is also accessible to the general public, we immediately thought of Puerto Rico’s leading academic institution, the UPR, its Faculty of Humanities, and its Art History Program. This opportunity excites us because it strengthens the ties of collaboration and understanding between Puerto Rican artists on both sides and a new generation of art historians. At the same time, this initiative helps expand our understanding of Puerto Rican art by focusing on the production of Boricua artists rather than the geography where their work is created,” said Ángel Antonio Ruiz Laboy, Associate Director of Arts and Culture at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies.
The Center for Puerto Rican Studies is located at Hunter College, CUNY, and is the largest academic research center, archive, and library dedicated to the study of the Puerto Rican diaspora. It was founded in 1973 and has since been a pillar and benchmark in the fields of ethnographic, Latin American, and Caribbean studies. Its Arts and Culture department, established in 2022, focuses on promoting artistic and academic research on Puerto Rican art and culture.
Meanwhile, the interim director of the Art History Program at UPR-RP, Dr. Mercedes Trelles Hernández, states: “It is crucial that our students have professional opportunities in research and writing. The initiative by the Center for Puerto Rican Studies in New York is particularly important because it creates a broad vision of Puerto Rican culture both on and off the Island. With this initiative, we begin a conversation with diaspora artists and institutions that we hope to continue and strengthen. We thank Dr. Yomaira Figueroa, Director of the Center, and Ángel Antonio Ruiz Laboy, Associate Director of Arts and Culture, for this initiative.”
The Art History Program was established in 1967 and has operated as an independent program since 2009. It is a unique undergraduate program within the University of Puerto Rico system, offering students training in the analysis and interpretation of visual culture, artistic practices, and architecture. The program emphasizes the development of research skills and critical thinking, and offers two areas of study: European Art and Latin American and Caribbean Art.
El programa de Historia del Arte de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, recinto de Río Piedras, ha sido seleccionado para colaborar con el Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños de la ciudad de Nueva York en una base de datos y herramienta de investigación sobre artistas puertorriqueños de la diáspora. Veinte colaboradores, en su mayoría estudiantes, producirán ensayos críticos o entrevistas profesionales sobre artistas de la diáspora para expandir los recursos de investigación disponibles en la plataforma..
Diasporican Art in Motion es una iniciativa del Centro que lleva en desarrollo poco más de dos años y que ha sido en parte subvencionada por la National Endowment for the Arts. La plataforma, dirigida a investigadores del arte, curadores, educadores y estudiantes, cuenta con sobre 140 perfiles activos en su página web y con aproximadamente 300 perfiles en desarrollo. La herramienta busca dar visibilidad al entramado cultural puertorriqueño de la diáspora, creando en su primera etapa un directorio y, en esta segunda, produciendo conocimiento sobre estos artistas a través de una serie documental y la producción de ensayos académicos que se publicarán en línea a través de la revista virtual del Centro, RicanWritings.
“Cuando identificamos la necesidad de producir conocimiento académico pero accesible al público general, de inmediato pensamos en el primer centro docente del país, su facultad de Humanidades y su programa de Historia del Arte. Esta oportunidad nos entusiasma pues fortalece los lazos de colaboración y entendimiento entre los artistas puertorriqueños en uno y otro lado y una nueva cepa de historiadores del arte. A la vez, esta iniciativa ayuda a expandir nuestro entendimiento del arte puertorriqueño, ya que lo ubica en la producción de los artistas boricuas y no en la geografía donde estos producen su obra.” señaló Ángel Antonio Ruiz Laboy, director asociado de Arte y Cultura del Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños.
El Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños se ubica en Hunter College de CUNY y es el mayor centro de investigación académica, archivo y biblioteca dedicado al estudio de la diáspora puertorriqueña. Fue fundado en el 1973 y desde entonces es un pilar y referente en el campo de los estudios etnográficos, latinoamericanos y caribeños. Su departamento de Arte Cultura, fundado en 2022, se enfoca en promover la investigación artística y académica del arte y la cultura puertorriqueña.
Por su parte, la directora interina del Programa de Historia del Arte de la UPR-RP, la Dra. Mercedes Trelles Hernández, comenta “Es crucial que nuestro estudiantado tenga oportunidades profesionales de investigación y escritura. La iniciativa del Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños de Nueva York es particularmente importante pues crea una visión amplia de la cultura puertorriqueña en y fuera de la Isla. Con esta iniciativa comenzamos una conversación con artistas e instituciones de la diáspora que esperamos continuar y reforzar. Agradecemos a la Dra. El Programa de Historia del Arte fue creado en 1967 y opera como un programa independiente desde el 2009. Se trata de un programa subgraduado único en el sistema de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, que le ofrece al estudiantado una formación en el análisis e interpretación de la cultura visual, las prácticas artísticas y la arquitectura. El Programa de Historia del Arte enfatiza el desarrollo de destrezas de investigación y de pensamiento crítico por parte de los estudiantes y ofrece dos áreas de estudio, Arte europeo y Arte de América Latina y el Caribe.
