RicanWritings Open Call
Following the past legacy of our beloved electronic magazine Voices, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (CENTRO) is excited to announce our new electronic magazine, RicanWritings. In the same way Voices chronicled and preserved the dynamic lives, histories, and culture of Puerto Ricans and their communities in the mainland United States, we aim for RicanWritings to be a magazine of current affairs for our communities, where the vanguard of our art, culture, history, research, and opinion serve to connect Puerto Rican thought and experiences in the diaspora and in the archipelago. It is a place where contributions and conversations between emerging writers and well-established members of the community can add to our vast history with monthly publications.
Celebrating the leadership of CENTRO’s first Black Puerto Rican Senior Director, Dr. Yomaira Figueroa, RicanWritings aligns with the mission and vision of her initiative “Rooted + Related.” We are excited to publish you because this is tu casa. Your engagement with this platform is crucial in amplifying these conversations.
The call emphasizes RicanWritings as a platform for engaging with contemporary issues affecting Puerto Ricans in the archipelago and the diaspora. We seek submissions that offer:
- fresh perspectives on how we Puerto Ricans think,
- how we want to respond to current realities,
- meditations, observations and comments on our critical engagement to the new environments we are living in, in relationship with
- and foster essential conversations between each other.
Submissions are encouraged to include new forms of digital expression, such as digital mappings and multimedia, reflecting the digital age in which these discussions occur.
An essential feature of RicanWritings is its Open Peer Review process. This process allows for greater collaboration between writers, the editorial team, and authors. Writers selected for publication receive a fellowship of $250 and actively participate in reviewing and providing feedback on the previous month’s submission. This reciprocal process encourages continuous dialogue and development within the writing community and values your contribution to it.
Please submit a 250-word abstract of your work to the linked Asana form. We accept abstracts and manuscripts in English and Spanish. Further submission details are available via the Asana form.
