Arts & Culture Internship

CENTRO’s Arts & Culture Hub supports both the research process of artistic creators and the production of scholarly research focused on Puerto Rican artistic expression. 

CENTRO is seeking a part-time Arts & Culture intern. The goal of this internship is to help further develop skills in a professional work environment and learn more about working in the Arts & Culture field. The intern will be working closely with the Arts & Culture team on projects related to artistic residencies, exhibitions, partnerships with other cultural institutions, free public programming and artist talks.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Intern will support Arts & Culture initiatives and projects through:

  • Assisting with calendar management and identifying local arts events and openings of interest
  • Assist with scheduling, coordinating meetings, and taking meeting notes
  • Assisting with contact management 
  • Research related to Puerto Rican artists, exhibitions, and movements
  • Organization of  artist materials and file management
  • Assisting with analyzing data and demographics
  • Demonstrated interest in CENTRO’s mission, as well a passion for collaborating with artists and organizations.
  • Assist with gathering materials for grant applications and reports

Intern will Learn/Develop:

  • Fluency in Spanish and English is helpful
  • Students can come from the following disciplines:
    • Fine Art, Art History, Communications, Media, Cinema or Cultural Studies
    • Latinx, Latin American or Caribbean Studies
    • Spanish, Linguistics, Literature

Research Internship

Centro seeks to advance and provide digital humanities resources alongside innovative approaches to scholarship to attract new audiences.

Responsibilities

Students will assist with the production of a new Digital Humanities initiative at Centro using CUNY’s Manifold publishing platform. They will collaborate with the Research team to create interactive and multimodal academic resources on this platform.

Preferred Skills:

Knowledge of Google Suite, Basic HTML, Data Entry, interest in Puerto Rican history and culture

Marketing Internship

CENTRO’s Communications Unit develops, coordinates, and executes a comprehensive communications strategy to engage our audiences, raise brand awareness, and increase support for CENTRO.

Responsibilities

CENTRO is seeking a part-time Marketing Intern. The goal of this internship is to help further develop your marketing skills in a professional work environment. As an intern, you will be working closely with the Communications Department who will provide you with hands-on projects that use our marketing platforms to promote and manage CENTRO’s brand image, message, and upcoming events. Interns will be able to apply classroom-based knowledge to projects and gain essential skills needed to be career ready.

Interested candidates must show a demonstrated interest in CENTRO’s mission, as well as have a passion for collaborating with community members and organizations.

  • Interest in E-commerce, Direct Marketing, Content Marketing, Social Media, Public Relations, Website Content Management, or Advertising
  • Ideate and execute a semester long marketing campaign to add to their portfolio upon completion of the internship
  • Assist in the creation of social media content and newsletter content
  • Assist in the growth of the brand by raising awareness through various marketing channels
  • Assist in organizing data and analytic reports about our audiences
  • Assist with CENTRO’s events
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred Skills

  • Must be enrolled in a program/ major related to Communications, Public-Relations, Marketing, Journalism
  • Creative mindset and the ability to multitask
  • Familiar with posting on multiple social media outlets through Buffer
  • Comfortable working with Google Workspace, Asana, Canva and Mailchimp
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • English fluency required
  • Ability to prioritize projects and meet deadlines
  • Commitment to and knowledge of Puerto Rican history and culture in Puerto Rico and its diaspora

Events Internship

The CENTRO Events Unit supports both internal and external stakeholders by providing free educational programming for our communities in the Diaspora, the Archipelago, and beyond. Our programming is offered year round and follows the academic calendar of Hunter College, with programming concentrated within the Spring and Fall semesters. We address topics related to the arts, data and research, archival material, books and other periodicals, and current events. 

Responsibilities

CENTRO is seeking a part-time Events AssistantIntern. The goal of this internship is to help further develop your skills in a professional work environment. As an intern, you will be working closely with the Events Team who will provide you with hands-on projects that advance CENTRO’s aim to showcase the richness of the Puerto Rican experience. Interns will be able to apply classroom-based knowledge to projects and gain essential skills needed to be career ready. The work you do at this internship will help CENTRO understand our audience and inform future programming.

Interested candidates must show a demonstrated interest in CENTRO’s mission, as well as have a passion for collaborating with community members and organizations.

Responsibilities include

  • Assist with the planning and execution of Centro events, this includes, but is not limited to, emailing participants, helping develop run of shows & critical paths, developing copy, and more
  • Track event engagement and attendance
  • Provide reports detailing event attendance 
  • Assist with managing events calendar
  • Coordinate across units to advance events
  • Monitor events Zoom chat
  • Other duties as assigned

Intern will learn/ develop the following skills

  • Data management and visualization on Google Sheets
  • Google drive organization and management
  • Event planning, production, and execution 

Preferred Skills:

Work Schedule:

Interns are expected to report to work anytime between the hours of 10 to 4 on Tuesdays, Wednesday, and/or Thursdays.

Location: 

Hybrid

Note: 

This is a hybrid position; interns will be able to work remotely as needed and will only be expected to report to the office as needed for events execution and preparation. Interns will receive a one week notice before they must report to the event.

Partnerships & Outreach Internship

CENTRO regularly works with community organizations and leaders across Puerto Rico and the Diaspora to develop research projects, public education initiatives and cultural programs. 

Responsibilities

Intern will assist in the managing and growth of our community presence and awareness.

  • Identify possible community partnership and education opportunities with local and national organizations
  • Assist with the planning and coordination of community events
  • Participate in meetings with potential partners
  • Demonstrated interest in CENTRO’s mission, as well a passion for collaborating with community members and organizations.

Preferred Skills:

  • Be organized and detail-oriented
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Positive attitude and the ability to work independently as well as with others
  • Strong interest in Puerto Rican Studies
Library Internship

The Centro Library and Archives is a treasured place where researchers, academics, teachers, students, genealogists, filmmakers, and the community at large find primary (historical documents) and secondary sources about the history and culture of the Puerto Rican diaspora. The Digital Collections provide access to photographs, documents, artifacts, art, maps, oral histories, moving image and audio clips, and other digitized or born digital material pertaining to stateside Puerto Ricans.

Responsibilities

  • Shelve and arrange books, DVDs, Microfilms and other library materials in order, alphabetically and numerically in the Reference Stacks
  • Locate and pull books, DVDs, Microfilms and other library materials and help prepare them for researcher visits
  • Assist with shelf maintenance, such as shelf reading, shifting, or flagging damaged books
  • Assist with compiling and maintaining reader metrics
  • Assists patrons with basic computer, internet and audio/visual equipment usage, including microfilm machines and scanners
  • Assist with researcher needs such as photocopying document requests, etc.
  • Answer simple in-person inquiries and refer patrons to the appropriate person(s) or place(s) for further assistance
  • Help set up the Reading Room for events and programs
  • Project a positive and courteous attitude to the public by providing exceptional customer service
  • Perform other related tasks as needed and work on special projects as assigned

Preferred Skills

  • Interest in Puerto Rican and Latinx/Latin American History.
  • Minimum: Current or recent undergraduate status, especially good for students hoping to learn library science
  • Knowledge of computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe, etc.).
  • Willingness to learn Library Classification Systems and generally the operations of a Library & Archives.
  • Strong organization and time-management skills; attention to accuracy and detail is essential.
  • Working knowledge of Spanish is desirable.
  • Willing and eager to learn new skills and work with a diverse group of people.
  • Physical requirements include lifting, bending, and pushing carts up to 40lbs.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment
Publications Internship

Publications from the Center for Puerto Rican Studies explore the Puerto Rican diaspora, but also Puerto Rico. They showcase the latest research in a range of disciplines and are presented in a variety of formats; from the pre-eminent journal in the field, to scholarly books and a digital humanities journal, and a current affairs magazine. Centro Publications’ commitment to scholarship and its dissemination continues to expand as the field of Puerto Rican Studies develops in new directions. 

Responsibilities

The Publications Intern will assist the Publications Aide and support the publications team in the production of organizational publications, which may include journals, books, posters, catalogs, brochures, and promotional materials such as newsletters, reports, postcards, and fliers. Essential duties may include filing, mailings, research, data entry, email correspondence, copywriting, fact-checking, project tracking, and other administrative work.

Preferred Skills

The ideal candidate is working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Puerto Rican/Latino Studies, English, journalism, or a related field. Excellent communication/writing skills in English required. Communication skills in Spanish a plus. Familiarity with Microsoft suite required. Familiarity with publishing and editing software a plus. Familiarity with academic databases and/or graphic design software is helpful. The ideal candidate has a passion for and familiarity with issues related to the Puerto Rican experience in the United States.
