SUMMARY:Afternoon Tertulia: The Memory of Radical Student Movements
DESCRIPTION:Join CENTRO on September 19th for a panel discussion on radical student movements and the screening of “The Five Demands”\, a film documenting the student takeover of City College of New York in April 1969. Following the Vietnam war\, protests like the one at City College\, led by Puerto Rican and Black students\, set the tone for affirmative action\, ethnic studies\, and the founding of CENTRO. Moderated by CENTRO Directora\, Dr. Yomaira Figueroa-Vasquez\, the panel will expand on the film by exploring the legacy and impact of student organizing and protest in combating institutional racism. DESCRIPTION:Join CENTRO on October 17th as we celebrate the breadth and depth of our archives with a special screening of Layers: A Dance Film by filmmaker and dancer César Abreu\, CENTRO Artist in Residence. Abreu uses the vibrant legacy of Puerto Rican artists reflected in our archival collections to influence this cinematic exploration of dance to express the personal resilience and triumph of individuals traveling their paths within marginalized communities.  Following the screening\, you will have the opportunity to hear a live performance of the film composer Angélica Negrón’s music\, Ruta Panorámica for Cello\, Bandoneón\, and Electronics\, and learn about the film’s creative process from a panel featuring Abreu\, Negrón\, and visual artist Roxane Revon.
