In 2014 there were an estimated 10,842 Puerto Rican same-sex cohabitating couples in the United States discernible from publicly available Census Bureau data. These same-sex households comprised 0.7% of the nearly 1.6-million Puerto Rican households in the U.S. The proportion of same-sex Puerto Rican households was slightly higher than both the same- sex couple household proportions among all U.S. households (0.6%) and non-Puerto Rican Hispanic households (0.5%). Key characteristics of observable same-sex couples included higher levels of education, labor force participation, employment, and income when compared to other households.
