Join Puerto Rico-born\, Chicago-based artist Brenda Torres-Figueroa for a performance inspired by diaspora\, survival\, and the legacies of Afro-Puerto Rican women. Registration for this free event is encouraged. \nThis performance is offered in connection with the exhibition Diasporic Collage: Puerto Rico and the Survival of a People\, which is on view from August 31\, 2024–February 2\, 2025. This exhibition explores Puerto Rican identities in the archipelago and its diasporas through art.

SUMMARY:(Partner Event) Opening Reception of RicanVisions: Global Ancestralities and Embodied Futures!
DESCRIPTION:The Latinx Project invites you to the opening reception of  RicanVisions: Global Ancestralities and Embodied Futures\, the newest exhibition of the organization. This exhibition was curated by Ana-Hilda Figueroa de Jesús\, Andrea Sofia Matos & Xavier Robles Armas and will be open from January 31 – May 2\, 2025\, at the 20 Cooper Square Gallery and 3rd Floor Gallery. \n\nRicanVisions: Global Ancestralities and Embodied Futures featuring the work of nineteen emerging and established artists from the contemporary Diasporican and Nuyorican community. The exhibition aims to continue to expand the canon of Diasporican visual art\, bridging the past and present of contemporary art from the Puerto Rican diaspora. The exhibition includes emerging artists\, some who are showing in New York City for the first time\, as well as veteran artists overdue for recognition\, such as Marina Gutiérrez and the abstract artist Evelyn López de Guzmán who are showcasing work that has never been exhibited before. Some of the artists were selected through their participation in the annual Artist-in-Residence open call at The Latinx Project. \n\nArtists featured in the exhibition are Manuel Acevedo\, Armando Alleyne\, Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, Vyczie Dorado\, Orlando Estrada\, Marina Gutierrez\, Lee Jiménez\, Juanita Lanzo\, Miguel Enrique Lastra\, Evelyn López de Guzmán\, Jacoub Reyes\, David Rios Ferreira\, Shey ‘Rí Acu’ Rivera Ríos\, Keysha Rivera\, Jorge Luis Rodríguez\, G. Rosa-Rey\, Angelina Ruiz\, Tamara Torres\, and Isaac Vazquez. The exhibition is the first curated in-house by The Latinx Project and reflects its largest curatorial effort to date.

DESCRIPTION:Puerto Rican actor\, writer\, professor\, and author Teófilo Torres\, better known for his classic on-stage monologues such as; “Papo Impala está quitao” and “El Caso Dios\,” is back in New York City with his latest creative endeavor\, the satirical laugh-out-loud book\, Décimas por Sacos. \n\nWritten in the preferred style of the Puerto Rican jíbaro and troubadour\, the décima\, this book is a unique record and reflection of the Puerto Rican character\, joyous but critical. It spans almost ten years of original writing\, which Torres primarily published online through social media using his original character\, Pateco\, as the primary voice. \n\nThe book presentation will also include a performance by the actor and live music. \n\nLight snacks and beverages will be available.
