DESCRIPTION:Join moderator Gustavo Quintero and panelists Virginia Sánchez Korrol\, Malena Rodríguez-Castro\, Molly Crabapple\, and Ángel “Monxo” López-Santiago virtually on September 3rd as they discuss the Spring 2024 CENTRO Journal on Bernardo Vega’s manuscript “La familia Farallón.”  \n\n\n\nDiscovered in 2011 and donated to Centro de Investigaciones Históricas (CIH) at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras\, Vega’s manuscript was originally the source for Memorias de Bernardo Vega: contribución a la historia de la comunidad puertorriqueña en Nueva York (1977)\, edited by César Andreu Iglesias. This issue continues the comparative study of Vega’s original text and its edited version\, exploring a century-long Puerto Rican diasporic history\, focusing on experiences in New York from 1916-1947 and Vega’s later political activities in Puerto Rico while emphasizing collective struggles\, community building efforts\, and the many achievements of Puerto Rican migrants. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Molly Crabapple “Portrait of Bernardo Vega”\, 2023 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMissed the event? SUMMARY:Library & Archives Lunch Hour: Celebrating Carmen Pabón - La Madrina de Loisaida
DESCRIPTION:Join CENTRO Archivist\, Herbert Durán\, and Gabriela Sanchez\, board member and volunteer at the Carmen Pabón del Amanecer Jardín\, as they explore the Carmen Pabón del Amanacer Jardín Collection housed at our Library & Archives. Carmen Pabón\, dubbed “La Madrina de Loisaida”\, was a community leader who transformed a vacant lot into a community garden\, with the intention of creating a leisure space for children and older adults. The garden\, named El Bello Amanecer Borinqueño Garden\, provided food\, clothing\, and support for the unhoused of New York City. In the evenings\, the garden would become a hub for activism and poetry. Mayor Rudy Guiliani would eventually sell the garden to a private developer in 1999 but that did not stop Pabón’s activism\, she continued to advocate for other L.E.S staples such as St. Brigid Church in 2008. In 2016\, El Bello Amanecer Boriqueño re-opened under a new moniker\, “Carmen Pabón del Amanecer Jardín.” Pabón passed away just a few weeks after the ribbon cutting ceremony. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Carmen Pabón by Marlis Momber for Loisaida Magazine \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMissed the event? SUMMARY:Afternoon Tertulia: The Memory of Radical Student Movements
DESCRIPTION:Join CENTRO on September 19th for a panel discussion on radical student movements and the screening of “The Five Demands”\, a film documenting the student takeover of City College of New York in April 1969. Following the Vietnam war\, protests like the one at City College\, led by Puerto Rican and Black students\, set the tone for affirmative action\, ethnic studies\, and the founding of CENTRO. Moderated by CENTRO Directora\, Dr. Yomaira Figueroa-Vasquez\, the panel will expand on the film by exploring the legacy and impact of student organizing and protest in combating institutional racism. Especialmente en lo que respecta a la filosofía\, el estudio y la lucha negra y afrodiaspórica\, así como al abolicionismo y la organización revolucionaria\, tanto dentro como fuera del aparato penal\, su vida y obra exigen un compromiso y una difusión mayor. En palabras de Rojo Robles “Los escritos recogidos [en este volumen] muestran la labor encomiable de Sostre como filósofo de la revuelta\, organizador carcelario\, abogado autodidacta\, librero y promotor de la cultura negra”. La publicación también incluye una introducción y un estudio exhaustivos y amplios del editor del libro\, el académico puertorriqueño Julio Ramos. Los textos de Sostre incluidos en el volumen han sido traducidos al español por Julio Ramos\, Juan Carlos Quiñones y Paula Contreras. Over the years\, O’Farrill has forged impactful artistic collaborations\, and the Worldwinds performance residency project is yet another example of Arturo and the ALJE pushing the boundaries of style and medium.
