SUMMARY:Partner Event: ¡Oye! Puerto Rican Theater Breaks Through: Exhibit Opening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The 1970s marked a turning point in the history of Puerto Rican theater in New York City. A vibrant arts scene of Puerto Rican playwrights\, poets\, and actors emerged\, one that traversed the boroughs and neighborhoods of the city and influenced audiences from all cultural backgrounds. Groundbreaking\, contemporary works of art that focused on the stories of Puerto Ricans in New York City proliferated. Incisive plays\, such as Miguel Piñero’s Short Eyes and Eduardo Gallardo’s Simpson Street\, debuted\, and artist spaces\, like the now famed Nuyorican Poets’ Café\, were born and nurtured.\n \n\nThis marked a sharp distinction from the previous generation. In the 1950s\, during a post-war wave of migration from Puerto Rico to New York\, newly transplanted Puerto Rican artists were creating works that reflected life on their native island. Productions by and about Puerto Ricans focused on the stories of those Caribbean communities from their homeland. Two decades later\, a new perspective infused the plays and poetry by and about Puerto Ricans\, one that embraced the identity of Puerto Rican New Yorkers\, “Nuyoricans”\, and focused on the dynamics of life on the mainland for citizens from the island. This shift brought new artistic innovation and a thriving artistic community.\n\n\nJoin us as we explore the history of Puerto Rican theater in New York City in a conversation with leading artists and scholars\, in tandem with the new archives exhibit\, ¡Oye! Puerto Rican Theater Breaks Through\, on view in David Geffen Hall.\n\n \n\nModerator: Dr. Yomaira Figueroa-Vásquez (Director\, Center for Puerto Rican Studies/Hunter College)\n\nPanelists:\nDr. Karen Jaime (Associate Professor of Performing and Media Arts and Latina/o Studies\, Cornell University)\nCaridad de la Luz (Executive Director\, Nuyorican Poets Cafe)\nDr. Virginia Sánchez Korrol (Professor Emerita\, Department of Puerto Rican and Latino Studies\, Brooklyn College)

SUMMARY:Cafecito con... Marisel Moreno: Crossing Waters
DESCRIPTION:Join Marisel Moreno\, award-winning author of the book Crossing Waters: Undocumented Migration in Hispanophone Caribbean and Latinx Literature & Art\, and Dr. Yomaira Figueroa-Vásquez\, CENTRO Directora\, for a cafecito as they reconsider the traditional understanding of borders\, migration and Puerto Rico’s unique position in the migration narrative. \n\n\n\nDebates over the undocumented migration of Latin Americans invariably focus on the southern US border\, but most migrants never cross that arbitrary line. Instead\, many travel\, via water\, among the Caribbean islands. The first study to examine literary and artistic representations of undocumented migration within the Hispanophone Caribbean\, Crossing Waters relates a journey that remains silenced and largely unknown. \n\n\n\nCrossing Waters\, which has received the 2023 Honorable Mention\, Isis Duarte Book Prize in the Haiti/Dominican Republic section (LASA)\, and the prestigious 2023 Gordon K. and Sybil Lewis Book Award from the Caribbean Studies Association\, can be purchased from the University of Texas Press here: https://utpress.utexas.edu/9781477325605/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDid you miss this event? SUMMARY:The Sounds of the Archives: Compositions Inspired by the CENTRO Archives Collections
DESCRIPTION:Our Archives are an incredible source of inspiration\, not just for scholarly research but also for artists of all disciplines. Recently\, two composers: our Artist in Residence\, Gabriel Bouche Caro and Guarionex Morales Matos\, produced two contemporary compositions based on their research. Join us on May 30th for a very special musical performance and witness the rebirth of archived sounds into innovative musical arrangements. \n\n\n\nGabriel Bouche Caro’s piece is a new performance for solo instrument and narrator/singer. It resembles a stream-of-consciousness/musical theater monologue with the vocalist representing the complexities of the Puerto Rican identity and current situation. The performance’s narrative is constructed by taking highly specific texts from the collections of Tato Laviera\, Victor Hernandez Cruz\, Pura Belpre\, and more and making them into a dramatic reading that brings forth conflicts within the ‘diasporican’ identity\, the duality of being a nationalist living in the colonizer’s land\, and the image of an artist who wishes to bring forth the intricacies and beauty of their culture to the world. This is Puerto Rican music\, not as folk\, but as a synthesis of sound\, experience\, tradition\, difficulties\, and successes that come from living life square-rooted in a richly complex and demanding cultural situation.  \n\n\n\nGuarionex Morales Matos’ project\, Pedro Pietri: An Aesthetic Collision Between His Poetry and Puerto Rican Art Song explores the exclusion of diasporic poets from the Puerto Rican art song genre through the work of Pedro Pietri. Pietri’s poetry constitutes the perfect compositional material for this genre\, despite the euro-centrical criteria that have historically marked the latter’s development and approach towards the public. Morales Matos strives to transgress said conventionalisms to crumble the artificial barriers between art forms\, as well as those that divide the popular\, folk\, and classical music spheres. The lyrics and music will derive from three of Pietri’s least-known texts to create a powerful triptych for mezzo-soprano\, clarinet\, and piano. \n\n\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by NALAC: National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Image: Sheet music for performance of “Perez y Martina”\, Pural Belpré Papers.
