DESCRIPTION:NATURA at Taller Boricua brings together ArteYUNQUE’s inaugural artist cohort\, embodying a poetic exploration at the intersection of art\, nature\, and El Yunque. The exhibited works delve into the intricate interplay among these elements\, addressing themes such as the political dimensions of the landscape\, the richness of biodiversity\, the significance of soil\, and enduring traditions. \nFeaturing commissioned installations by Migdalia Luz Barens-Vera\, Zaida Adriana Goveo Balmaseda\, Jorge González Santos\, Ivelisse Jiménez\, Guillermo Rodríguez\, Jaime & Javier Suárez\, and Omar Obdulio Peña Forty\, the works in NATURA were originally conceived and installed within El Portal Visitor Center Trail in Río Grande and have now been thoughtfully adapted for presentation in the gallery. \nIn this new setting\, the exhibition opens a dialogue between the rainforest and a traditional gallery space\, creating connections between diasporic communities and ancestral landscapes while exploring art’s capacity to bridge cultural identity\, environmental consciousness\, and collective memory. \nJoin us for the opening reception:\nThursday\, September 10 at 6:00 p.m.\nTaller Boricua\, 1680 Lexington Avenue\, El Barrio\, New York 10029 \nPhotos by Christopher Gregory-Rivera. The program combines scholarly presentations with methodological exchanges and publication-oriented activities following a collaboration as a method model. \n\n\n\nThis event is happening alongside La Feria Internacional del Libro de la Ciudad de Nueva York (FILNYC) organized by the Mexican Studies Institute. In a contemporary landscape saturated with content\, panelists will reflect on how digital platforms can move beyond immediacy and visibility to create meaningful\, research-informed engagement that expands public access to culture. The conversation will explore strategies for producing accessible yet rigorous cultural content while navigating questions of audience\, credibility\, representation\, and the democratization of knowledge in digital spaces. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPublishing Decolonial Scholarship: An Introduction to CENTRO Publications  \n\n\n\n2:30-3:30 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis panel introduces CENTRO’s publication initiatives and their evolving role in shaping and expanding Puerto Rican Studies through decolonial scholarship and accessible cultural discourse. The conversation will highlight the CENTRO Journal\, one of the leading publications in Puerto Rican Studies with nearly four decades of history\, alongside the recently revitalized Centro Press and its new editorial collections responding to emerging conversations and needs within the field. The session will also explore the role of RicanWritings\, CENTRO’s digital magazine platform\, as a more agile and responsive space for contemporary cultural analysis\, public scholarship\, and day-to-day engagement with Puerto Rican and diasporic life. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArchives as a Decolonial Force for Writing on Diasporic Research\n\n\n\n4:00-5:30 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis panel explores how archival practices and research methodologies shape artistic production\, cultural scholarship\, and diasporic knowledge-making across books\, films\, exhibitions\, and other cultural forms. Grounded in the understanding that the histories and experiences of the global majority have often been excluded from mainstream narratives and institutional archives\, the conversation will reflect on the urgent need to trace\, preserve\, and document these histories through community-centered and decolonial approaches. Panelists will discuss archives not only as repositories of memory\, but as active forces for cultural recovery\, creative practice\, and the production of new diasporic research. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeynote by Joey Quiñones\n\n\n\n6:00 – 7:30 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoey Quiñones is a fiber artist\, ceramicist\, and mixed media sculptor. Their work focuses on African American and Caribbean history\, specifically queer\, Afro-Puerto Rican identity. Their work has been shown nationally and internationally at venues such as the Palais de Tokyo\, Manifest Gallery\, the Akron Art Museum\, the Crocker Museum\, the Shepherd\, the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery\, the Winterthur Museum\, and The Sculpture Center. They have an MFA in Studio Art from Indiana University\, Bloomington\, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Iowa. CENTRO’s latest journals (Spring & Summer 2026) explore a complex political space defined by movements resisting racial/colonial capitalism through the unique lens of Puerto Rican experiences. DESCRIPTION:Part showcase. Part workshop\, Part happening. Come join us for Archiving Home: A Community of Practice. This culminating event will highlight the work of Archiving Home participants while inviting broader dialogue and engagement with the community and other practitioners. Join us to learn about non-traditional diasporic archival practices\, connect with others interested in diasporic memory work\, and engage with the emotional\, spiritual\, and personal side of archiving.Archiving Home: A Community of Practice is a collaborative initiative between Centro\, Dominican Studies Institute\, and Haitian Studies Institute that brought together archivists\, cultural workers\, and community memory practitioners engaging with diaspora- and ethnic studies-focused archives.
