SUMMARY:Partner Event: Last Request
DESCRIPTION:Last Request presents the story of a corpse discovered in the lobby of a pre-war Bronx apartment building in the 1950s. \n\n\n\nWritten approximately two years before his death in 2004\, the play is a rare theatrical work by the Poet Laureate of the 1960s Puerto Rican revolutionary organization\, the Young Lords. Last Request presents the story of a corpse discovered in the lobby of a pre-war Bronx apartment building in the 1950s by a young couple\, an old couple\, and a blind couple. Their reactions to his possessions trigger escalating chaos and revelations about their personal lives\, becoming an exploration of morality\, greed\, dignity\, and survival in mid-century urban life. \n\n\n\nKnown for elevating street language\, working-class experience\, and collective memory in his poetry\, Pedro Pietri was a foundational figure in the Nuyorican poetry movement. Presented at Teatro LATEA\, a location that sustained experimental bilingual performance throughout the 1980s and 1990s\, the production locates Pietri’s rarely staged theatrical work within the same cultural context that originally shaped his artistic voice. The play is directed by Juan Valenzuela\, a México-born director\, playwright\, actor\, short story writer\, and performer who has been active in the downtown New York scene since the 1970s. He has directed several plays by Pedro Pietri and has served as space manager at the Yippie Museum. His plays include “Love\, Ambition & Destiny.” \n\n\n\nThis play will be presented alongside an exhibition by artist Miguel Trelles\, curated by Alejandro Torres\, titled Nuyorican Splendor II. This exhibition brings together portraits and “garabatos” inspired by Trelles’ encounters with iconic Nuyorican writers. \n\n\n\nThis production and exhibit promises to immerse viewers and attendees in the energy of the Nuyorican movement through the works of Pedro Pietri and the many people he inspired. The show runs from April 9th to 26th.

SUMMARY:(Partner Event) Jose Nogueras: Boricua Donde Quiera
DESCRIPTION:Kicking off the Navidad Season with IBA is Jose Nogueras!\n\nJosé Nogueras is one of Puerto Rico’s most versatile songwriters and singers. He has managed to reach the top of the music charts (Hit parade) in rock\, ballad\, Creole music and even tropical music.\n\nCheo Feliciano\, Rubén Blades\, Hector Lavoe\, Ismael Miranda\, Willie Colón\, Gilberto Santarrosa\, Manny Manuel\, Shakira\, Danny Rivera\, Los Hispanos\, Fernando Villalona and Olga Tañón are some of the artists who have performed his compositions.\n\nNogueras has been awarded over the years with important awards such as; “Composer of the Year” (Billboard Magazine)\, “Singer of the Year” (Agüeybana and Cemí Awards)\, “Christmas Production of the Year” and his compositions have always been distinguished by their simplicity\, depth and universal feeling.\n\nBorn in the town of Mayaguez where he was born on June 18\, 1951\, son of José Nogueras Chapel (QPD)\, from the town of Añasco and Milka Vega Soto from the city of cucumber\, San Sebastián. From an early age he felt a passion for music\, an inspiration that he has always channeled through the instrument he enjoys the most… the guitar. His father was a simple and humble human being\, with an extraordinary talent for poetry and perhaps it has been that vein that has allowed the development of José Nogueras as an author.\n\nAt the age of eight he came to reside in the city of Rio Piedras where he feels like an adopted son. During his school years\, between the ages of 8 and 16\, he participated in a number of musical groups. At the age of 17 he began his foray into music professionally.\n\nTheir record productions have been characterized by their excellent quality\, both technically and musically. Each of them is framed in a concept\, distinguished by its sensitivity and innovative way of harmonizing the topics.\n\nJosé Nogueras’ music has not only managed to captivate the Puerto Rican public with its contagious rhythm and flavor\, but has also been recognized in other Latin American countries and in the Hispanic sector of the United States.

SUMMARY:The Sounds of the Archives: Compositions Inspired by the CENTRO Archives Collections
DESCRIPTION:Our Archives are an incredible source of inspiration\, not just for scholarly research but also for artists of all disciplines. Recently\, two composers: our Artist in Residence\, Gabriel Bouche Caro and Guarionex Morales Matos\, produced two contemporary compositions based on their research. Join us on May 30th for a very special musical performance and witness the rebirth of archived sounds into innovative musical arrangements. \n\n\n\nGabriel Bouche Caro’s piece is a new performance for solo instrument and narrator/singer. It resembles a stream-of-consciousness/musical theater monologue with the vocalist representing the complexities of the Puerto Rican identity and current situation. The performance’s narrative is constructed by taking highly specific texts from the collections of Tato Laviera\, Victor Hernandez Cruz\, Pura Belpre\, and more and making them into a dramatic reading that brings forth conflicts within the ‘diasporican’ identity\, the duality of being a nationalist living in the colonizer’s land\, and the image of an artist who wishes to bring forth the intricacies and beauty of their culture to the world. This is Puerto Rican music\, not as folk\, but as a synthesis of sound\, experience\, tradition\, difficulties\, and successes that come from living life square-rooted in a richly complex and demanding cultural situation.  \n\n\n\nGuarionex Morales Matos’ project\, Pedro Pietri: An Aesthetic Collision Between His Poetry and Puerto Rican Art Song explores the exclusion of diasporic poets from the Puerto Rican art song genre through the work of Pedro Pietri. Pietri’s poetry constitutes the perfect compositional material for this genre\, despite the euro-centrical criteria that have historically marked the latter’s development and approach towards the public. Morales Matos strives to transgress said conventionalisms to crumble the artificial barriers between art forms\, as well as those that divide the popular\, folk\, and classical music spheres. The lyrics and music will derive from three of Pietri’s least-known texts to create a powerful triptych for mezzo-soprano\, clarinet\, and piano. \n\n\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by NALAC: National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Image: Sheet music for performance of “Perez y Martina”\, Pural Belpré Papers.
