SUMMARY:Partner Event: Nuyorican Splendor II:  The Pietri Portrait & Nuyorican Garabatos.
DESCRIPTION:Teatro LATEA\, New York\, NY – On April 16\, 2026\, as Pedro Pietri’s play “Last Request”\, directed by Juan Valenzuela\, enters its second week of a three week run at the theater\, Miguel Trelles opens “Nuyorican Splendor II: The Pietri Portrait & Nuyorican Garabatos”\, a visual arts exhibition featuring a series of portraits of Nuyorican authors curated by Alejandro Torres. \n“Nuyorican Splendor II: The Pietri Portrait & Nuyorican Garabatos”is a very personal visual reminiscence by Puerto Rican visual artist\, Clemente resident and LATEA director\, Miguel Trelles\, riffing on his encounters with several of the poets while assisting his mother\, Puerto Rican literary critic and author Carmen Dolores Hernández with the photo documentation for her book of interviews: Puerto Rican Voices in English (Praeger\, 1997). \nSeveral of the paintings that will be exhibited were featured as covers in Centro\, The Journal of Puerto Rican Studies (Hunter College)\, while other paintings/drawings are based on Trelles own photos taken during some of the writers’ visits to Trelles’ studio @ The Clemente and yet others are black and white “garabatos” based on iconic photos of the poets most strongly identified with the NUYORICAN POETS movement. \nThe exhibit is a snapshot of Miguel Trelles’ acquaintance with some of the writers as well as a tribute to the most enduring and influential Puerto Rican literary movement in the United States and the world. \nAfter the opening reception on April 16\, 2026\, from 5:00 PM to 6:30PM\, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase tickets for Pedro Pietri’s Last Request @ LATEA. \nFor more information about the exhibition and upcoming events\, please visit teatrolatea.org or contact Teatro LATEA at info@teatrolatea.org. \nTeatro LATEA is the foundational theater of The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center located on the second floor of The Clemente at 107 Suffolk Street. \nSupport for the exhibition graciously provided by the Grand Street Settlement.
