SUMMARY:(Partner Event) I Cannot Submit to Injustices: Martin Sostre’s Continuous Struggle
DESCRIPTION:Join Mariame Kaba\, Garrett Felber\, and Corey Devon Arthur for a conversation about the life\, work\, and ideas of Black Puerto Rican revolutionary Martin Sostre. As a founding figure of both the prison abolition movement and contemporary Black anarchism\, Sostre’s eminence as a political thinker and tireless activist continues to gain wider recognition. The event will focus on the recent publication of I Cannot Submit to Injustices: Collected Works of Martin Sostre (AK Press\, May 26\, 2026). \n\nGarrett Felber is a writer\, organizer\, and community librarian with the Free Society People’s Library in Portland\, Oregon. They are the author of Those Who Know Don’t Say: The Nation of Islam\, The Black Freedom Struggle\, and the Carceral State and A Continuous Struggle: The Revolutionary Life of Martin Sostre. \n\nCorey Devon Arthur is a formerly-incarcerated writer and artist from Brooklyn\, New York. He makes art as an intimate way to heal and offer hope of a reimagined future\, where we strive to resist first with love\, and then with all else we are made of. Corey hopes to create art until every corner of the earth and the people who inhabit it have been touched by his work.\n\nMariame Kaba is an organizer\, educator\, and librarian/archivist. She is the author of the New York Times Bestseller We Do This ‘Til We Free Us: Abolitionist Organizing and Transforming Justice (Haymarket Books\, 2021) & the National Bestseller Let This Radicalize You: Organizing and the Revolution of Reciprocal Care with Kelly Hayes (Haymarket\, 2023). \n\nRunning from April 4 through June 28\, 2026\, The Warehouse is a collaboration between artist and writer Vic Liu\, abolitionist organizer Mariame Kaba\, and the Bedford branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. The project features more than two dozen new\, full-scale paintings by Liu that cover the library’s walls\, transforming the public space into an immersive exploration of resistance\, survival\, and possibility.

Rosamary Berríos Hernández’s film Santiago de las Mujeres screens at Mishkin Gallery from March 3-7.\n\nThis bilingual conversation with Berríos\, organized by the Black Studies Colloquium\, offers audiences a compelling opportunity to engage with documentary filmmaking in a dynamic and participatory manner. The event will focus on ethical filmmaking practices\, Black spirituality and culture in Puerto Rico\, and women’s narratives\, drawing inspiration from Berríos’s film Santiago de las Mujeres (2023). DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Elena Martinez (Modern Languages and Comparative Literature\, Baruch College) and Dr. Rojo Robles (Black and Latino Studies\, Baruch College) for a discussion on the “Black Gaze” as a critical and political act of spectatorship. Often theorized within the context of African American cinema\, the Black Gaze challenges the whiteness of mainstream media\, fostering confrontation\, intimacy\, and accountability in portraying Black lives.\n\nThis event seeks to expand the concept of the Black Gaze beyond the US to the Caribbean basin and Latin America\, examining how affirming Black cinema in the region can provide an Afro-diasporic perspective of its societies and geographies. Key questions include: How can the Black Gaze engage with the visualities of the Caribbean basin? How are Latin American and Caribbean cinemas incorporating—or displacing—Blackness in their narratives? Explore Black cinema’s historical\, cultural\, and aesthetic dimensions and its role in reclaiming agency\, dignity\, and authenticity in storytelling across the diaspora.

SUMMARY:(Partner Event) Radical Sovereignties\, Radical Archives: The Archivo Histórico de Vieques
DESCRIPTION:Vulnerable communities enact sovereignties that decenter the state while strengthening relationships on which survival depends. This panel will delve into such radical praxis through a closer look at archiving and the Archivo Histórico de Vieques. The AHV is a community archive born out of the struggle against the U.S. Navy’s occupation of Vieques\, Puerto Rico (1940s-2003). In the early days\, it aimed to give voice to Viequenses and to counter the silences imposed by colonialism. Today\, the AHV continues to cultivate community-centered stories. Moreover\, it empowers community members to narrate history in their own terms and to\, through such enactment of narrative sovereignty\, chart out Viequense futures. This panel will accordingly address how archiving can be a praxis for narrative sovereignty that enables communities to reclaim their stories\, counteract historical erasures and assert control over their collective memory. Panelists include historians and archivist from the Puerto Rican archipelago and diaspora.

Especialmente en lo que respecta a la filosofía\, el estudio y la lucha negra y afrodiaspórica\, así como al abolicionismo y la organización revolucionaria\, tanto dentro como fuera del aparato penal\, su vida y obra exigen un compromiso y una difusión mayor. En palabras de Rojo Robles “Los escritos recogidos [en este volumen] muestran la labor encomiable de Sostre como filósofo de la revuelta\, organizador carcelario\, abogado autodidacta\, librero y promotor de la cultura negra”. La publicación también incluye una introducción y un estudio exhaustivos y amplios del editor del libro\, el académico puertorriqueño Julio Ramos. Los textos de Sostre incluidos en el volumen han sido traducidos al español por Julio Ramos\, Juan Carlos Quiñones y Paula Contreras.
