A book tour promoting Centro’s newest research publication, Puerto Ricans at the Dawn of the New Millennium, will kick off with events in New York, Massachusetts and Puerto Rico, where Centro Director Edwin Meléndez will discuss the volume, primarily comprised of research conducted by Centro staff. New Millennium looks at the social, economic, political and health conditions of the Puerto Rican population throughout the U.S.
“Taking the book outside the New York metropolitan area reflects the new reality that Puerto Rican communities are no longer centered just in the New York metropolitan area", said Meléndez. “New communities are being established, and older ones are growing, all over the U.S. Centro was born to serve all stateside Puerto Ricans, and as they disperse we must find ways of bringing our services, including research like this, to them wherever they are. And with more people who identify as Puerto Ricans living off the island than on it, we also need reinforce our ties with the land of our heritage.”
The book represents one of Centro’s various efforts to raise its national profile. “Our task is to build a nationwide network through partnerships nationwide with public and private institutions that share Centro's goal of preserving and promoting the experience and legacy of Puerto Ricans in the U.S.,” Meléndez said. Another initiative connecting our communities nationwide via web is the recently launched Centro Voices e-magazine.
The book tour begins on October 1st (12-2pm) at NYU’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. A second presentation will take place on October 31, from 6-8pm, at the Holyoke Public Library in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Then, the tour travels to Puerto Rico onNovember 6, from 10:30am-12:30pm, at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao and onNovember 8, from Noon-2 pm, at the Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe in Old San Juan. Other book presentations are being planned for the spring.
