La Preferida

Justo A. Martí Photographic Collection, 1948-1985

Besides La Preferida name, the favorite one in Spanish, and the Get Libby’s products sign with a supposedly Hispanic flavor, there are a few elements of the typical bodega storefront. The empty racks inside the store might be indicative of a transitional moment before getting the Community Better Business Agency (CBBA) beer license requirement. This license was one the main reasons many bodegueros hired Martí to capture exterior and interior views of the bodega stores. August 18, 1952. (Retouched photograph for the Bodega exhibit.)
