Fiesta de San Juan celebration

Justo A. Martí Photographic Collection, 1948-1985

Mexican women lead procession of la Virgen de Guadalupe at Fiesta de San Juan on Randalls Island, NY. The Fiesta de San Juan was begun in 1955 by Puerto Rican migrants in New York who wanted to re-create Puerto Rico's San Juan Bautista festival. Although the celebration was established by the Puerto Rican community, it was a festival in which all Hispanic peoples participated. The Fiesta San Juan of New York became an annual festival with sponsorship by the Catholic church.
