Justo A. Martí Photographic Collection, 1948-1985

Mexican actor and singer Luis Aguilar at the Teatro Puerto Rico, Bronx, NY. Aguilar, pictured in folkloric Mexican charro dress, was born in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico January 29, 1918 and died in Mexico in 1997. Teatro Puerto Rico, located at 490 East 138th Street in The Bronx, New York, was a 2,700-seat public space where members of the Latino community gathered for live entertainment, and to celebrate their culture. In its heyday in the 1940s and 1950s,Teatro Puerto Rico drew Hispanic performers from all parts of Latin America and the Caribbean. Blight affecting the South Bronx in the 1960s and 1970s eventually caused the theater to close, but Teatro Puerto Rico was renovated and reopened in 1987.
