Justo A. Martí Photographic Collection, 1948-1985

Mexican actor Jorge Negrete in traditional charro costume, stands beside a woman dressed as a Spanish matador at Teatro Puerto Rico, Bronx, NY. Puerto Rican singer Ramito (on right) wearing the traditional jibaro, or pava, hat with the name "Moralito" across the brim. Teatro Puerto Rico, located at 490 East 138th Street in the Bronx, New York, was a 2,700-seat public space where members of the Latino community gathered for live entertainment, and to celebrate their culture. In its heyday in the 1940s and 1950s,Teatro Puerto Rico drew Hispanic performers from all parts of Latin America and the Caribbean. Blight affecting the South Bronx in the 1960s and 1970s eventually caused the theater to close, but Teatro Puerto Rico was renovated and reopened in 1987.
