Los Gaiteros at Casa Galicia

Justo A. Martí Photographic Collection, 1948-1985

Los gaiteros, or bagpipe players, in traditional Galician dress perform at Casa Galicia, New York, NY. Photograph was taken for La Prensa Spanish-language daily. Galicia, in the northwest region of the Iberian peninsula, has a history and culture influenced by the Celts and Spanish, with a language, gallego, derived from Latin, Portuguese and Spanish. The gaita is a traditional bagpipe of Galicia, evidence of the Celtic influence in the culture. Written on back of photograph: "Los gaiteros de la Casa Galicia, dirigidos por Carlos Rodriguez, donde se lee algo en gallego. Para la Prensa. 9-27-57." ("The gaiteros of Casa Galicia, directed by Carlos Rodriguez, a taste of Galician culture. For La Prensa, 9-27-57.")
