Libertad publication cover of the 40th Anniversary of the Attack on Congress

José E. Velázquez Papers, 1950s-1999

The Libertad cover of the 40th anniversary of the United States Capitol shooting incident, an attack on Congress on March 1, 1954 by four Puerto Rican nationalists (Lolita Lebrón, Rafael Cancel Miranda, Andres Figueroa Cordero, Irvin Flores). The cover also commemorates the 14th anniversary of the capture of Puerto Rican political prisoners, who were convicted of seditious conspiracy in the early 1980s for their resistance to colonialism. Many of their sentences were later commuted by Presidents Clinton and Obama.
