Interview with Juan Sanchez on Dec 14, 2015, Segment 2, Part 1

CENTRO: 100 Puerto Ricans Oral History Project, 2013-

Sanchez talks about how he became interested in the arts. Since he was a 6 year-old, he felt inclined to draw, which he later pursued in high school when he started to think about commercial art and illustration. When he was accepted into Cooper Union School of Arts he began as a graphic design major, but as he was more exposed to painting, drawing, photography, he became more attracted to fine arts than to commercial art. Sanchez describes that his first works consisted in illustrations of his political and social concerns. He made paintings of Pedro Albizu Campos and the Young Lords. He talks about how with his camera he started to document the daily life of his community in Brooklyn and he explains the influence that other Puerto Rican artists, such as Miguel Algarin and Pedro Pietri, had in his development as a visual artist.
