Presidential Medal of Freedom Ceremony

Antonia Pantoja Papers, 1923-2002

In 1996, President Bill Clinton presented Antonia Pantoja with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work in education, pioneering efforts in community development, and role in the development of several seminal Puerto Rican institutions. This medal is the highest civilian award in the United States, making Pantoja the first Puerto Rican woman to receive such an honor.
