Interview with Lydia Valencia on May 10, 2016, Segment 21

CENTRO: 100 Puerto Ricans Oral History Project, 2013-

Valencia discusses the main challenges and obstacles Puerto Ricans face in New Jersey. Her responses are grounded in the context of the exodus of Puerto Ricans from the island to relocate to the mainland in the wake of the debt crisis. The first obstacle, per Valencia, is the lack of knowledge that it is a growing community with a unique context and unique problems. She touches on lack of cultural competency on the part of officials; lack of governmental funds to assist the new population; and the problem of Puerto Rican issues lost in the shuffle of “Hispanic issues” within an already existing diverse Latino community, among other issues. Valencia posits the challenges are not New Jersey’s alone. The new migrants will confront similar obstacles everywhere and the wave of migration will have the same impact wherever there is work and a large Latino population. Valencia offers solutions.
