Valencia gives more details about her mother, Virginia Rodríguez La Llave. Married and divorced young with two children in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico in the 1930s, Virginia was an outcast. She relocated with her two children to New York City where she found work as a finisher in a factory. Later, she met and married Juan Aurelio Valencia Aguardio. Valencia describes Virginia as "a very strong woman. She wasn't limited by anything or any circumstances."
