Interview with Juan J. González on April 8, 2016, Segment 14

CENTRO: 100 Puerto Ricans Oral History Project, 2013-

The Puerto Rican flag is raised at Camden's Police Administration Building in a ceremony that kicks off the month of festivities leading up to the San Juan Bautista Parade at the end of June. González here talks about the importance of the flag and its ceremonial raising as a means to honor Puerto Rican ancestors and to celebrate heritage. It is also one way the parade committee educates Puerto Ricans and non-Puerto Ricans on the cultural history embedded in the flag. During the parade thousands of handheld Puerto Rican flags are waved by residents, regardless of heritage. The South Jersey Federal Credit Union, a sponsor of the San Juan Bautista Scholarship Fund, passes them out for free.
