Interview with Ricardo Fernández on June 6, 2019

CENTRO: 100 Puerto Ricans Oral History Project, 2013-

In this interview, Fernández discusses how he handled several challenging situations and opportunities for expansion during his tenure as Lehman College President.

Part One: 00:00:00 He starts with the student protest in the Spring of 1991 in response to tuition increases. 00:15:00 In continuation, he describes his “baptism of fire,” when a student gets shot and killed during a woman’s softball game. 00:18:42 Fernández goes on to discuss the rationale for closing down the Department of Academic Skills (Remediation Unit) and the Physical Education Department in response to budget cuts. 00:32:47 In the second half of the interview, Fernández speaks about his partnership with the Board of Education to establish a specialized high school on Lehman Campus called the High School for American Studies.

Part Two 00:00:00 Fernández discusses the complexities involved in maintaining and improving the quality of public education institutions in New York City. 00:10:13 Fernández provides a brief history of CUNY and his vision to transform Lehman into a leading Senior College by expanding STEM research and the Science Hall. 00:18:04 The interview ends with Fernández reflecting on his father who was a medical doctor and life events that led to a career in public higher education. 00:31:08 He closes by sharing early education experiences attending a Catholic elementary school and an all-boys Jesuit school in Puerto Rico.
