CENTRO: 100 Puerto Ricans Oral History Project, 2013-

This portion of the interview with Luis Garden Acosta is about the leadership and collaboration between El Puente (the organization) and El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice. There was a strong bond and collaboration between the organization and the school. El Puente staff were asked to teach at the Academy. Debbie Montalvo (biology) and Joe Matunis (history) taught at the academy. During the early years of the Academy, the leadership did not want the Department of Education, with its archaic rules and bureaucracy to damage their movement for peace and justice. In addition, Garden Acosta discusses Joe Matunis and Los Muralistas from Williamsburg. He briefly talks about Matunis' visionary creation of Los Muralistas El Puente.
