CENTRO: 100 Puerto Ricans Oral History Project, 2013-

Segment 28 (part 2)
Question Asked: What lead to the dismantling of the Young Lords Party?
In this clip Garden Acosta shares his disapproval of the Young Lords Party transforming into the Revolutionary Workers Organization. He starts by telling us that in 1973 the Young Lords Party transformed into the Puerto Rican Revolutionary Workers Organization. He states that the organization decided to make the change because they felt they could not lead the worker struggle without themselves being workers. Young Lords Party members were expected to leave their pursuits, including school, in order to become part of the working class, by working in factories. Garden Acosta admits that he could not understand this new direction. According to Garden Acosta, there was a fierce struggle at the time to get people into institutions of education that had historically kept them out. He concluded by stating that although people felt betrayed and were upset with him for the decision, he became the first Young Lord to leave the organization.
