Perales, former President and General Counsel of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Eduation Fund (PRLDEF), discusses his childhood and growing up in Corona, Queens. He also speaks about his education, first at the all-boys Roman Catholic school, Regis High School on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, then City College (CUNY) and Fordham Law School. Perales explores his identity as a Puerto Rican-American and the racism he has experienced. He goes on to discuss his career as an attorney working with neighborhood legal services in Williamsburg Brooklyn at PRLDEF, fundraising, and working with other Latino attorneys, including Herman Badillo and Geraldo Rivera. He speaks about his first major case regarding discrimination against Puerto Ricans by the New York Police Department, and other issues such as voting rights for Puerto Ricans and the development of bilingual ballots. Perales also discusses the integration of Latino and African-American residents in Hasidim dominated public housing in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
