Juan González Interview Three, Tape 2, Side A

CENTRO: Centro Oral History Project (COHP) / Latino Educational Media Center (LEMC), 2003-2008

González speaks about visiting the Young Lords chapter in Chicago, establishing a chapter in New York City, and the ideas and practices that were applied to the New York chapter. He discusses the Young Lords' 13-point platform and sums up the purpose of the group as working to end oppression and to start a social movement in the United States. He talks about the early projects of the Young Lords, including meeting on Sundays and sweeping the streets in the community. Eventually this outreach led to what became known as the 'Garbage Riots' against the poor sanitation services and increased media exposure and membership. He also discusses the idea of 'community control' and fighting for Puerto Ricans to gain control over institutions within their community.
