María Canino Interview Two, Tape 1, Side B

CENTRO: Centro Oral History Project (COHP) / Latino Educational Media Center (LEMC), 2003-2008

Canino was a student at the City University of New York (CUNY) in the early 1960s, and speaks about her involvement with education activism, the Hispanic Youth Association and the Puerto Rican Association for Community Affairs (PRACA). She speaks about her work with the East Harlem Tenants' Council, and of how that work helped her get involved with education activism. Canino also discusses her involvement in the beginning of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (Centro) in CUNY. In 1969, she was appointed a Trustee of the City University of New York by Mayor John Lindsay. She speaks about how this position conflicted with her desire to become more involved, at the faculty level, with Centro.
