Farewell to Gilberto Concepción and his family. SS San Jacinto, Sept. 16, 1939, NYC. Gilberto Concepción was the founder and president of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP). He passionately argued for Puerto Rico’s independence and for social justice for all Puerto Ricans. He was also a distinguished lawyer, journalist and professor. In 1936, he moved to the United States, where acted as Chief Counsel for Pedro Albizu Campos and other Puerto Rican nationalists accused of treason by the United States government.
