Bendición: In Praise of All Who Seek Consulta From La Rubia

La Rubia:
opens her home to patrons at 11 a.m. every day
welcomes many regulars and some new faces into her modest living room
shuffles the deck of faded naipes separating the cups, coins, clubs and
swords, these are the mouthpieces of the soul.

“Cut the deck with the left hand, it’s closest to the heart.” she says

Bendición for Luz:
scarred palms and petrified fingers
tangled with her husband’s jealous pot of bubbling canola oil
lights red candles to protect him from the inmates

Bendición for Sonia:
rubs her growing belly with a pumpkin each night
this one will be born with a full head of hair, strong lungs and a heartbeat
carries rompe saragüey in her purse

Bendición for Tito el Tiguere de la 183:
younger brother’s spine eagerly swallowed the bullet lusting for his chest
whispers the Lord’s Prayer coaxing each vertebra as he
helps dress him in the morning

Bendición for Gladys:
tries to calm the rowdy chatter of imaginary friends with
Brugal, Adderall, Xanax, church hymns and psalms
drowns their voices in glasses of cold water set under her bed

Bendición for Andres:
bloody feet, the only one abandoned by el coyote that survived
the season of death crossing the Sonora desert
buys white roses for his father’s bones swallowed by the sand
